A Time of Nativity and Jewish Celebration

December 2018 Wall CalendarFor Christianity:

December 2 – 24, Advent

Coming from the Latin phrase "Adventus Domini", preparation for the celebration of the birth of Christ is a season known to many Christians as Advent (arrival of the Lord).

December 6, St. Nicholas Day

December 24, Christmas Eve

December 25, Christmas

Christmas is the day when Christians celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. The Nativity story tells of the messiah’s humble, yet glorious beginning. This holiday is one of the two highest, largest days of celebration for Christians (along with Easter).

December 28, Holy Innocents

December 31, Watch Night

For Judaism:

December 2 – December 10, Hanukkah

Known as the Feast of Dedication, Hanukkah can almost be thought of as the ‘Christmas of Judaism.’ This holiday commemorates the dedication of the second Holy Temple in Jerusalem during the Maccabean Revolt (lasted from 167 BC – 160 BC). This holiday sees Jewish observers lighting a candle of a menorah each day of the festival while playing games, exchanging gifts, reciting special prayers, and eating special foods.

Even Jesus celebrated Hanukkah in his day.
